About Sprague's Sports

Sprague's Sports

Countless people have passed through the doors of Sprague’s Sports over the years, whether to shop for firearms and ammunition, to learn how to shoot safely and accurately, or to hone their shooting skills in the indoor range that is part of the Yuma business.

But many of those customers may not know much about the legacy of a family business that goes back nearly 100 years. "It began with the Starlite Motel", says Richard Sprague, owner of Sprague’s Sports and its sister business, Truck Mates.

The new, 22,000-square-foot building affords space not only for retail sales, but a 15-lane indoor shooting range and a classroom for shooting safety instruction. “We have a classroom that seats 24 and we have classes regularly for firearms safety and other affiliated classes,” Richard Sprague said, "adding the classes are tailored to students whether they want to carry a weapon for personal defense, take up hunting or simply punch holes in paper targets."

Gun Training classes are offered during the day and at night. People can register for the classes on the Sprague’s Sports website. Contact Sprague's Sports for

The Sprague's Family

Sprague’s Sports itself has 30 full time employees, among them Ron Gissendaner, the first person ever hired by Richard Sprague.

As for what’s ahead for the businesses, Sprague says that in 2022 Sprague’s Sports and Truck Mates will become an employee-owned company, with employees accruing shares according to their seniority.

“It has been something I’ve been working on for a while, and it will allow Sprague’s to continue far into the future with the great team that we have.” he said. The customer “is not just dealing with someone who works there. They have a vested interest, and that works best for those on both sides of the counter."
